I've been taking a lot more portraits again recently... partly facilitated by being invited to shoot a friends daughter's pre-prom party.
It all started out with the teenagers being very shy and self conscious and not wanting to pose in the garden in view of all the others.
It started to rain so we had to move inside and as soon as they had a bit of privacy in the dining room, away from all of their friends they soon loosened up and we go some great shots.
It was nice to get the flash/umbrella/cactus trigger combo out again for some "strobist" action.
Processed in LR4 with the B&W Look 5 pre-set for a high key effect. I also added some more clarity, as unusually for teenagers, their complexions were flawless and their skin could handle having more mid tone contract (clarity slider)

Colour Temperature
The geek in me loves photography for all the of the buttons and settings, the intracacies of exposure and the various "rules" of composition and lighting.
The artist and creative in me loves it for the sheer joy of creating beautiful images.
These taps are from my bathroom. I've often thought they'd make a good photographic study. I decided it would be a good example to use for a colour temperature experiment.
Both photos were taken with the same camera settings and developed from RAW in the same way using Lightroom 4 and Photoshop CS6. The only difference being the colour temperature adjustment slider in the RAW conversion.
I also used the same "fractalius" settings for a multiply layer in CS6 to give a lining/sketch effect to the edges.

Textured Beauty
I've been playing with my new (Xmas gift) Canon 50mm f/1.4 lens.
This was taken out for a walk with friends on New Years Day. My wife (pictured) doesn't normally stop long enough to pose for photos so I have to catch her unawares and get impromptu shots when I can. The speed of this lens means that I can get a quick shot before she moves again. Plus shooting with it at wide apertures gives a lovely bokeh.
This was then treated in photoshop with a gradient map to convert to B&W followed by several texture layers with diffffernt blend modes and then on a final flattened image a high pass sharpening masked to occur on only the eyes.
Oh and by the way, despite her not liking her photo taken I keep telling her how beautiful and photogenic she is.

Sea & Waves Intentional Camera Motion
Intentional Camera Motion (ICM) does exactly what the name suggests.
Instead of holding the camera steady to have a sharp image, the camera is deliberately moved during the exposure to distort the image.
This is different to panning the camera to follow a moving object as for ICM the object is usually stationary and so moving the camera creates a blurring or streaking effect depending on the motion and the object.
In this case the object was a stormy sea. The camera was panned during a 1/25 second exposure to give the effect of streaking horizontal lines.
This image was then processed in lightroom to level the horizon, brighten it slightly and then apply a blue/purple duotone.
The outcome is an abstract image that I am planning on printing as a panoramic canvas for display in my bathroom.
